Till Lies Do Us Part - Chapter 3

“Victor please, I can explain.” She said. I threw my car keys on the bed, asking her to please begin if she could. I couldn’t stop laughing as she pleaded with me, it was as if I was about to run mad. My so called wife had another lover. That meant she’d been cheating on me but how did she find the time to do that? How long had she been having such conversations with another man? She began to bite her finger nails in fear as she went down on her knees between my legs.

“I swear if you don’t start talking I will make you.” I made sure I scared her just enough. She swallowed her words one more time.

“Who were you talking to on the phone?” I decided to start with that. She grabbed a hold of my trousers tightly as if her life depended on it.

“Victor, I didn’t mean for this to happen. I love you…”

“Please don’t give me all that bullshit. I just need you to answer my question. Who was that you were talking to?”

“I tried loving you all these years but I soon realized I was only deceiving myself.”
I shook my head; I was soon running out of patience. I knew I had to calm her down before she could really speak to me. So I said, “Cynthia, look at me. I would never hurt you so please just talk to me. Tell me what I’m suspecting isn’t true because I swear to God, I will kill somebody…” I quickly regained my composure when she flinched away from me as she saw my hands go up.

“When we first met, you rushed everything and I played along because I didn’t want to hurt you.”

I don’t know how I did it but I kept calm. “Cynthia,” I called her name softly. “Are you saying you never loved me?”

She didn’t answer so I asked again but this time, I made sure she felt and heard every anger inside of me. She began to shake her head, jumping at the sound of my voice.

“You see, I loved him too.” She cried out and immediately placed her hands over her mouth when she heard her words echo loudly in our bedroom.

So, there was really another man, I said to myself. The hurt in my eyes when I realized the woman I had given everything to wasn’t who I thought she was was devastating.

“He was everything to me but you kept coming back and I gave in into you.” She continued.

“Who?” I asked solemnly.

“The night I gave you my number, Victor, you weren’t the only one who called me; he also did.”

“Who? James?” My best friends name flew out of my mouth without a second thought. She nodded her head as she began to cry once again. I didn’t know why his name had been the first name that came to my mind. I staggered to the bed and sat down. I couldn’t believe my ears. Come on, she had to be wrong! This couldn’t be the same James I knew. I knew back when Cynthia and I were dating that James had a thing for her but I thought it was just a mere crush. He was usually fond of many women but at times, the way he looked at her had me bothered but I never brought it because I respected our friendship. But now…

“He got angry when I told him that I would like to stay with you and make my marriage with you work. I don’t know how we did it, Victor but we both smiled at you, secretly mocking you as we shared our wedding vows.” She said.

“And the accident?” I asked because I was so convinced that everything wasn’t as it seemed any longer.

“Before we went to that engagement party that night, I told him I was through with him. It was James who hit us that night.” She dropped another one.

I opened my mouth and no words came rushing out. “Don’t you dare stand there and lie to my face, James would never do such a thing. Do you know long I’ve known him? He’s like a brother to me for Christ sake!” I was convinced there had to be some misunderstanding going on. James wouldn’t want me dead, not because of a woman.

“You blacked out after the incident and so did I but when I woke up the next morning, I was lying on his bed.”

“Bu… ut you said…” I stuttered.

“No,” she shook her head. “It was all a lie.” She whispered. “I’ve been… I’ve been staying with James since the accident. After the accident, he came for me; just me.”

Everything was unfolding like a movie. My whole world was turning upside down. And I had one last question for her.

“Why’d you come back? You had James and James had you. Why come back!”

“A month ago, James told me about a new business deal you made with the company you work for.” I began to shake my head in shame. So this was all Cynthia was? Just a woman who was after my money? Just a woman I foolishly loved.

She continued, “I came back, not planning to stay forever. I was going to get as much of the money you make from the deal and take it back to James along with Iffy…”

“Wait, wait, wait, what does my child have to do with this?” I stood up, anxious to hear what might come out from her mouth. In this game of lies, there was no telling what could come next.

“She isn’t yours, Victor. She isn’t.” She whispered.

I grabbed her forcefully by the neck. I felt like strangling her to death. Iffy was all I had, the only thing that brought me joy and now Cynthia wanted to take that away from me. They wanted to finish me completely. I came back to my senses the instant she began coughing. I released my hands from her neck and she fell to the floor. In that moment, I realized I had won and lost everything I thought was mine.
She coughed violently. “Haven’t you realized all these while that she looked nothing like you!” she shouted. “You always like to pretend that everything is fine, that’s how we got here.”

So all this was my fault? Was it wrong for me to have believed that the woman I married was completely faithful to me? How many married men went around conducting a paternity test for their children?

Cynthia had finished me, leaving nothing behind. “James wanted me dead that night didn’t he?” I asked. Oh it was on when she gave me the silent answer.

“Where are you going to?” She asked when she saw me grab my car keys.

“Please, Victor, please don’t hurt him.” She cried.
