Till Lies Do Us Part - Chapter 18

“Thanks for taking the time out to come down here at such a short notice, Mr. Emmanuel. I’ll get back to you on our decision.” Victor shook the man’s hand and led him to the door. By the time he was done sending Mr. Emmanuel off, Daniella was standing in the middle of the room.

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to embarrass you…its just that, I...I don't” She stuttered, her face flushed with embarrassment. “You know what; I’ll just leave you alone.” She thought she’d been the one who took the step forward, but it’d been the both of them. Victor had immediately advanced towards her, blocking her from taking another step to leave. He knew she wanted to run away but he wasn’t ready to let her off so easily.

Daniella swallowed, to clear her throat before she spoke again, that’s if she could find words to say to this man that was standing in front of her like a giant rock that can't be moved.

“You did nothing wrong, Daniella.” He said, her name rolling out of his tongue with ease. “The last thing I want is for you to feel uncomfortable around me. I thought you would want this…” His words spilled out like pure honey as he reached for her right hand and folded her palm into his. “But I get it, it wasn’t right to just make plans without telling you about it. I promise it won’t happen again.”

Daniella had allowed him take her hands partially because she was shaking on her feet, but most especially, because she wanted to have him grab hold of her for the first time. She’d gotten just what she’d hoped for and maybe too much. They were so close now; both stared into each other’s eyes as Victor leaned in painfully slow. It’s happening… she thought. No one was stopping it or holding back. Victor was ready until his cellphone rang, embarrassingly ruining the moment. He drew back as if he’d come back to his senses.

He took his phone out of his pocket and saw the caller’s I.D. He’d taken her number the last time they were together and had saved it as Iffy in case of an emergency. He took a few steps away from Daniella until he was standing in front of his work desk before answering.

“I’m sorry for calling you... I know I’m the last person you want to speak to right now,”

“Get to the point,” he said sharply, his eyes on Daniella who he hoped was still waiting on him.

“Iffy needs you, she needs to see you. She couldn’t sleep all night…all she’d been doing is crying and asking after you––her daddy.”

He still had his eyes on her but Daniella could tell that he was no longer with her. It was as if he’d heard some bad news which made her wonder who he was talking to.
“Victor, say something. I can’t just leave her like this. She’s refused to eat anything... I can’t lose my daughter too.” Her voice cracked and Victor smiled bitterly. As much as he wanted to see Iffy, he wasn’t sure if he would be able to believe any words that come out of Cynthia’s mouth…but what if the child he’d promised to take care of really needed him?

“Tell her I’ll be there after work. Keep her calm for now, take her shopping or something; just keep her from crying.”

“I would, but…”

“But what?” he said forcefully.

“Justin took all our money with him––”

“God!” he grunted in annoyance. Even after everything, Cynthia was still trying to milk his last penny out of him. He wondered if he would ever be free of her.

“Do you think I like this, calling you and asking for your help after everything I’ve done to you…after everything we’ve been through? I know I’ve hurt you in the past, but I have to do right by my last hope for a change. I have to do right by my daughter.” She added, hoping this last line had done as much damage as she wanted it to.
Victor shook his head, knowing he was nothing but a game for her to play. No one needed to tell him what he had to do to rid Cynthia off his life but he was in no position to take a daughter away from her mother. So he did what he could do. “I’ll have something deposited in your account…text me the details.”

“Oh thank you Victor…we can’t thank you enough. We’ll be waiting for you when you get off work. Bye for now.”

When Victor hung up and dropped his phone on his desk, Daniella saw that something had changed by the way he’d helplessly dropped into his chair. She wasn’t sure if it was in her place to her this but she did anyway…

“Who was that?”

“Someone you don’t know.”

“I know but you look so upset, that’s why I’m asking. I don’t mean anything by it.”

“You know what…get out of my office.” He stated out of the blue.

“Excuse me?”

“I don’t want to have to repeat myself …please get out.” He continued firmly.

“No.” she approached him steadily.

“Yes, no. I’m not leaving you until you tell me what has you so upset. What did that person say to you?”

“Daniella, just go.” He groaned.

“I don’t think you understand me either…I’m not leaving until you tell me why I should because if I’m not mistaken, you were about to kiss me before that phone call and now you’re throwing me out of your office?”

“I don’t want to have to do that, don’t make me.”

Daniella paused for quick moment to think about what exactly was going on. Victor was acting strange, for a lack of better words. She couldn’t describe exactly how he was looking at her now––as if she was the most disgusting thing he’d ever laid his eyes on. Those eyes had looked at her today, a few minutes ago as if she was covered in gold. It’d desired and wanted her as much as she’d wanted him but something if not everything had changed in him.

“And as for the school, you can forget about that too.”

Daniella blinked back the tears that were gathering in her eyes. Just what did he take her for? She knew his Mr. nice guy act had been too good to be true. She was the one to blame for believing he’d sincerely wanted to help her. But he’d hurt her instead.

“I don't know what has come over you and neither do I want to know but if you know what’s good for you, don’t you ever come close to me for as long as you and I remain on this planet. You’re a despicable man, Victor. You had my hopes up and then you dropped it because after all, you owned it, right? Well guess what?” She took one last bold step closer to him. “I don’t need you, Mr. Victor.”

Daniella took one last good at him and she could have sworn she saw regret replace that look of disgust shed seen in his eyes before. But she wasn’t going to stick around to find out what he really wanted. She left his office and hopefully his world without looking back.

After Daniella left, closing the door carefully behind, Victor quickly untied his tie and filled his lungs and stomach with big gulps of air. No one needed to tell him that he’d just made the biggest mistake of his one needed to tell him...
